Larian Studios Reveal a Latest Divinity, Declaring it Their Largest RPG Yet

The anticipation around the recent awards show was significant, particularly after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The mystery is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer packed with striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very opening of infernal gates.

Not the Expected Sequel

For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio warned that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This choice of words hints that the team could be designing a more action-oriented experience instead of another tactical title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it pioneered the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for intricate stories, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—qualities that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities you can achieve with a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.

The series is also famously permissive, enabling players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be solved in a variety of manners, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you remembered something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, players can anticipate more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
